This single-day, entry-level class is perfect for the shooter who already has a solid handle on safety, but is ready to learn the fundamentals the right way! Whether you’ve been shooting on your own for years and finally want to get some formal training, or you’re new to shooting and want to start off on the right foot, or you’re already a good shooter and need a refresher class with perhaps some new ways of looking at things, this is the class for you!

  • Building an effective grip

  • Basics of sight management 

  • Applying proper trigger control

  • Presentations and acquiring the dot/sights

  • Refining the draw (both AIWB and OWB) 

  • Recoil control

  • Visual “confirmation levels” (learning various aiming schemes) 

  • Refining reloads

  • Target transitions

  • Gear set up

  • Building a dry fire training plan

  • Intro to movement

 

NOTE: while there are no training or skill prerequisites for this class, students will be required to have an understanding of and the ability to follow the universal firearms safety rules, draw and holster safely, and have an open mind. 

 

REFUND POLICY: Refunds will only be given if Gateway Defense has to cancel a class. No refund will be given due to a student being unable to attend. A full class credit will be issued for a future Gateway Defense class by notifying brennan@gateway-defense.com no less than 14 days prior to the class date.

1-Day Pistol Foundations - Apr 8 (Appleton, WI)

    • A modern, reliable, semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380, 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. A backup gun is not necessary, but recommended. 

    • At least 3-4 serviceable magazines with a minimum capacity of 10 rounds. The more magazines the better. 

    • A Kydex holster that fully encapsulates the trigger guard (either OWB or IWB, no small of the back) or a duty holster such as Safariland 6000 or 7000 series holsters. No SERPA, nylon, or leather holsters allowed. (If you have any questions about this please reach out.)

    • A sturdy gun belt (concealed carry belt or battle belt/competition belt style).  

    • Minimum of 1 magazine carrier with the ability to carry at least 3 on your person (pockets work fine for this). 

    • 500 rounds of ammunition. (We will typically shoot around 400 but 500 is a safe bet) 

    • Eye protection (both clear and tinted recommended and sunglasses will suffice for daylight hours) 

    • Electronic hearing protection

    • Water and snacks 

    • Tools to service your optics, lights, holsters, guns, etc.

    • Spare batteries for optics and lights. 

    • Appropriate range attire such as pants with belt loops, closed toed shoes, rain gear, jackets, etc. (we train rain or shine)
